Tell us a bit about yourself + your business
Little Gem Handmade began in 2015 at my home studio in South Gippsland, Victoria. I didn't plan for my creative path to fall into jewellery making but I'm glad it did!
What tools do you use in your biz to keep you organised and on top of your tasks?
It's very basic for me, lists! I create lists using Reminders on my iPhone. It helps me prioritise and it's a great feeling to tick off off every task!
What is the best thing you have done for you and your business this year?
Though only a few weeks into 2017, I jumped into my first goal - seeking new stockists.
I've never approached a store before and it's a little outside my comfort zone but it's been an exciting part of my business' evolution. I'm looking forward to continuing to expand the availability of my jewellery.
Have you had a truly memorable customer experience that inspires you to keep doing what your doing?
I've been lucky enough to have met quite a few very supportive customers who have followed me all over the market scene to discover new pieces as soon as they're released.
Their loyalty and encouragement has been amazing. The connectedness with complete strangers through my jewellery makes creating pieces even more rewarding.
What's coming up that we can look forward to seeing from your biz?
It's not often that I haven't thought about where I'm heading next! There are always new designs, shapes or colour combinations in the pipeline.
Sometimes my plans are a little vague and just a snapshot in my imagination! I'm hoping to release more colourful eco resin pieces soon.
Name a creative artist you are admiring?
Liona Lee Designs - Liona is one of the most kind and supportive people in the handmade world!
What inspired you to start your business?
I started creating pieces for myself before the flow on to receiving requests, attending markets, opening online stores and finding stockists.
I believe creativity is balancing so making it a more significant part of my life has been really fulfilling.
What is your fav quote?
It's difficult to pick just one!
'Creativity is a wild mind with a disciplined eye' - Jon Acuff.
Plus an important one in the handmade world is
'It's better to fail in originality than to succeed in imitation' - Herman Melville
What is the number one thing that you love about running your own creative business?
The freedom to explore and evolve. It's constantly a learning process and continues to develop over time.
Where are you the most and least organised in your business?
Most organised area would be mailing orders and my market set up. Most disorganised is probably everything else!
What is the best advice you have received that has helped you in your business?
It's not really advice but the encouragement from others in the handmade community has been invaluable.
There are a network of makers who give each other feedback, pat each other on the back and are willing to help however they can.
Fortunately I received this support from the very beginning at markets and on social media and its really important to continue this cycle for others.
How do you handle moments of self doubt?:
Running a handmade business is a roller coaster ride! I've found reflection is really important.
Whether it's self doubt or a failure, looking back at past achievements can get me back on track.
A quick scroll through my Instagram feed is the perfect reminder!
Tell us about your most favourite or popular product/service that you have created recently?
I've become a bit obsessed with eco resin and have had so much fun trialling different combinations and exploring the possibilities.
What I've loved the most is how the resin can transform gemstones. Dull and broken pieces can look vividly colourful, showing the finest detail and amazing layers or natural facets.
